We were looking for a good cattle dog when we purchased
baby Mac from Marti Parrish, and we certainly got our money’s worth. Like his
father, Mac is tough, tough, tough - one of the hardest hitting dogs we have
ever seen. We have seen him hit a grown, 1000 pound cow in the head to stop her
from running away, and one hit was hard enough to bring her to her knees. When
Mac hits he throws his whole body, heart, and soul into the hit and gives it
everything he has. He heels with a vengeance and gets a good mouthful with every
bite. When he heels, he bites hard and low. Mac is not a sheep, goat or duck dog
at this point (he HATES ducks!) and may never work anything but cattle, but that’s
fine with us. Sometimes it may not look too pretty, but Mac always gets the job
done, whatever we ask him to do!! His job is to dog break and pen rank cattle
for us and our neighbors, to work as a turn-back dog in the holding pens and
working chute, and to bring cows up the lane to the headcatch. Just recently he,
Roger, and Bear penned a "swamp cow" for a neighbor that nobody had
been able to pen in two years. They not only penned her, they loaded her in the
trailer!! And took only about 30 minutes to do it. Mac is very
intelligent, we would probably say he is cunning. You can watch him and see the
wheels turning in his head. Sometimes he will use his intelligence to try to
outsmart you.
Mac is a good companion. He has very nice house manners, is
a good traveler, and has an affectionate disposition. For all his toughness when
working Mac is very sensitive. He wants very much to please, especially when
he's in the house - he seems to realize he must be on "best behavior".
He is not dog aggressive but like most males will finish a confrontation if
someone else starts it.
Mac is extremely sound, has good conformation, nice
movement, had full dentition until he lost a tooth due to a cow kick, scissors
bite, and good bone, which he passes on to his offspring. He has a pretty head
with lots of stop. Colorwise, he is a nice, dark red with a white blaze and a
large white splash on his neck, white front and feet (no copper - although he
does produce it sometimes), good bone. He sires nice, good size puppies with
good trim. He currently has offspring in working, companion, obedience,
tracking, and conformation homes, proving that he sires versatile and adaptable
pups that are suitable for companion homes.
