It’s
twilight at my Mamaw’s house
And a little girl’s delight,
‘Cause this is when the fireflies
Start twinkling in the night.
First
one or two, here and there,
Then Fireflies, Fireflies, everywhere!!
Catch them in a Mason jar
Set them on the porch
Then turn them loose again
So they can flash some more.
I see
you in the garden!
Look - down by the creek!!
Now I’ve caught you in my hand --
Let me take a peek!
Are
you hiding in the branches
Of the old apple tree?
Firefly, Firefly, where can you be?
You can’t hide your lantern
‘Cause it glows at will -
Come back, Firefly, please be still!
Now it’s
twilight at my own house
And I search until the night
Looking for the Fireflies,
But there’s none in sight.
Where are you, Firefly?
Did you have to go away?
At last -- one flashes up ahead
And lights upon the hay.
Let me
admire your neon glow
As childhood memories o’er me flow--
Tennessee mountains, Georgia pines,
Places we’ve been, Firefly,
And now left behind.
Things
never stay the same,
They’re changing all around.
The old times, like my Fireflies,
Just can’t be found.
