Note: My uncle, Wesley Kirby of
Knoxville, Tennessee, is a professional daylily hybridizer.
This poem was written for him. Rosies are
cozy, especially to nosies,
And Daisies, they never do tell.
Magnolias are glorious, supreme grandiflorias,
Camellias in winter excel.
Tea Olive - oh my! her smell is divine!
And Iris’s eyes shine so bright --
Old Larkspur’s hue mimics sky’s blue
Then Moonflowers light up the night.
Daffodils’ heads nod as they shed
Tears of joy that Spring’s finally here.
Flowering Peach, Quince, and Plum -
Your time will come!
And Petunia, you’re next, never fear!
My friends the Flowers fill all my hours
Their beauty makes my head giddy.
But tho’ I love short and tall,
My favorite of all
Is the outstanding, magnificent Daylily.
